Minn. GOP Convention Ended With $7M Surplus

ST. PAUL (AP) ― Last year's Republican National Convention in St. Paul ended with a $7 million surplus, and officials say it will be donated locally to benefit the needy.

An RNC study pegged the benefit to the local economy at $153 million, including the surplus the host committee plans to give to the St. Paul Foundation, the Minneapolis Foundation and the Minnesota Community Foundation to aid the hungry and the homeless.

The RNC study, done by a University of St. Thomas marketing professor, estimated the biggest economic impact was generated by security expenses, followed by hotels and the convention complex.

St. Paul City Attorney John Choi said the host committee's $10 million insurance policy protects taxpayers from costs related to protests and security.
