After Shooting, Red Lake Teachers Want Assistance

Bemidji, Minn. (AP) ― Several teachers who witnessed the 2005 school shootings at Red Lake High School said their post-traumatic stress disorder should make them eligible for state workers' compensation benefits.

Former school teacher Melissa Dobbs said she wants to go back to teaching but that the horrible events she witnessed are preventing her from returning to her classroom. She's unemployed now and said she doesn't understand why she has to lose her house because of her reaction to the incident.

Another Red Lake teacher said 30 of 45 Red Lake teachers have left since the shooting, mostly because of trauma. He said ten of them do not want to return to teaching at all.

The teachers said the state should help traumatized staff with transition programs or retraining efforts.
