Red Lake Victim Gets Prosthetic Eye

by Amelia Santaniello
(WCCO) On Wednesday, Red Lake shooting victim Steven Cobenais received a prosthetic eye.

Last March, Cobenais, 16, was shot in the face by Jeff Weise during the shootings on the Red Lake Indian Reservation. Ten people, including Weise, were killed in the shootings.

Cobenais had brain surgery after the shooting and lost an eye. On Wednesday, he was finally able to replace that eye.

The prosthetic gave Cobenais a new sense of pride.

"It was pretty cool," he said. "I finally got my eye, thank God."

"Maybe this will make him feel better about himself," said Leann Thunder, Cobenais' mother. "Because I know with one eye, he didn't feel very happy."

The teenager will get to wear his new eye all the time. Doctors told him not to take it out too often, so his eyelid can get used to it.

Thunder said she is grateful for this day.

"Every day, something new happens to him and I think about, you know, thanking God every day that he left him here with us," Thunder said.

Doctors will evaluate the new eye in a couple of months to determine if Cobenais will need any more surgeries.
