'Reader's Digest' Readers Pick Hero From Red Lake

Minneapolis (AP) ― Readers of a national magazine say Red Lake shooting survivor Jeffrey May is their Hero of the Year.

May will be featured in the April editions of Reader's Digest.

The 16-year-old was featured last year in the magazine's "Everyday Heroes" section and received the most votes among more than 16,000 cast in the contest.

May was shot in the face when he tried to tackle schoolmate Jeff Weise during the March 21 shooting on the Red Lake Indian Reservation in northern Minnesota. Weise killed nine people before killing himself.

Other nominees included a New York firefighter who pulled a man from a burning house and a fifth-grade school crossing guard who pulled a boy from the path of a van.
