Weise's Mother Appointed Trustee

Minneapolis (AP) ― A judge has named the mother of Jeff Weise, the gunman in last spring's shooting in Red Lake, as the legal representative of the teen's family in any future legal action.

Technically, Hennepin County Judge John Holahan found Joanne Weise, 35, competent to be appointed as a trustee for her son's next of kin.

Appointing a trustee can be a first step for people wanting to file a wrongful-death lawsuit.

Weise can use her newfound standing to seek medical records or other information about what happened when her 16-year-old son went on a shooting spree last March. He killed nine people before turning a gun on himself.

According to the order signed by Holahan, Jeff Weise's two grandmothers and half brother and sister are also considered next of kin.

A phone message left by The Associated Press for one of Weise's attorneys, William Lubov, wasn't immediately returned.
