Reality Check: Where Do Minn. Taxes Rank?

(WCCO) Gov. Tim Pawlenty says he won't accept any tax hikes to balance the state's nearly $1 billion budget deficit because, he says, Minnesota taxes are already too high. So how high are they?

It's hard to argue that Minnesota is not a high tax state because it is.

It's TRUE.

Minnesota 's total tax burden is consistently among the highest in the country.

Depending on who's doing the figuring, when you add up all the state and local taxes residents pay, Minnesota ranks 11th, 12th or 13th in the nation.

But that doesn't tell THE WHOLE STORY.

Some Minnesota taxes are high, and some are not, compared to other states. It all depends on who you are, and how you look at it.

Here's the REALITY...

Minnesota 's Revenue Department reports the state income tax ranks 7th in the nation, and the corporate income tax ranks 10th or 11th.

And IN FACT, some Minnesota taxes are lower. Minnesota's sales tax ranks nationally between 17th and 30th, and the property tax is as low as 35th in the country.

That's Reality Check.
