Reality Check: Clinton Backers Jumping To McCain
(WCCO)
One big question hanging over the Democratic National Convention is how regular Americans who once backed Hillary Clinton for president will vote come November. Many have said they'll go for John McCain.
The question for Hillary Clinton supporters isn't whether to switch to McCain. It's why.
IN FACT...
McCain is cleverly exploiting disunity among Democrats especially Hillary Clinton supporters. A pre-convention CBS News poll found that 23 percent of Hillary Clinton supporters could switch to McCain, even though he's on the opposite side of almost every important Hillary Clinton campaign issue.
It's TRUE.
Picking just a few issues, and there are many, the differences are obvious:
Hillary Clinton supports abortion rights. McCain opposes them.
Hillary Clinton wants the U.S. out of Iraq. McCain is one of the strongest supporters of the war.
Hillary Clinton wants universal health care. McCain calls government plans like that "socialized medicine."
"No way. No how. No McCain," Clinton said in her Tuesday night speech at the DNC.
That's NOT THE WHOLE STORY.
Hillary Clinton is not asking her supporters to forget, or even to forgive, any lingering resentments. This may in fact be a test of whether this race is about a politician or the issues.
That's Reality Check.
