Shelby To Receive Distinguished Minnesotan Award
Minneapolis/St. Paul (WCCO) ―
WCCO TV's Don Shelby will be recognized with a "Distinguished Minnesotan Award" today, Friday, May 8 during commencement ceremonies at Bemidji State University.
The award acknowledges the contributions of current or former residents of the state who have performed exemplary service to the people of Minnesota or the United States.
"Distinguished Minnesotans are individuals whose actions exemplify Bemidji State University's commitment to the environment, communities and the global family," notes Bemidji State President Jon Quistgaard." Don Shelby has dedicated his personal and professional life to these ideals, making him the perfect candidate for the honor."
Shelby has led the way in Twin Cities' broadcasting for nearly 30 years with his investigative reporting and news anchoring on WCCO TV and in recent years, with his radio show on WCCO Radio. He has received two George Foster Peabody Awards for his work and public service. In recognition of his life's work, Shelby was inducted into the Minnesota Broadcasting Hall of Fame in 2007. He has won all five of the nation's top awards for journalism, including three national Emmy Awards. In 1997, he received his second Peabody Award, the broadcast equivalent of the Pulitzer Prize, for his ongoing work for Minnesota's youth.
"Don Shelby has been the bedrock of our stations foundation for many years, and from his accomplishments and contributions, it's easy to see why," said Susan Adams Loyd, WCCO TV Vice President and General Manager. "We congratulate Don on this well deserved award and salute the example he sets for our community."
Shelby's commitment to mentoring has energized the station and the community. He has received several honors for his community work, including Minnesota Sportsman of the Year; Martin Luther King Humanitarian of the Year; the Great American Traditions Award by B'nai Brith; Minnesota Broadcaster of the Year; and the coveted Josten's Mr. Basketball Ring, an honor rarely given to an adult. In 2005, Don was named Best TV Newscaster in City Pages' Best of the Twin Cities Readers' Poll.
Along with anchoring our 10 p.m. newscast, and hosting his own afternoon program on WCCO-AM, Shelby's current project is the nationally acclaimed "Project Energy" series, widely credited for enlarging the dialogue about alternative fuels and conservation. Shelby also provides cutting edge commentary with his nightly "Good to Know" segments.
The award ceremony takes place today, Friday, May 8, at Bemidji State University's John Glas Fieldhouse at 2:00 P.M.
