Minn. GOPers Want Transit Aid For School Buses

ST. PAUL (AP) ― Two Republican lawmakers want to redefine transit in Minnesota law so some of the money can pay for school busing.

The proposal has little chance in the Democrat-controlled Legislature.

But Sen. Joe Gimse and Rep. Randy Demmer say their idea is an example of rethinking government as the state faces a nearly $5 billion deficit.

Their bill would send school districts $100 million a year in transit taxes.

They say the proposal would take pressure off property taxes and help districts replace aging buses and keep more routes operating.

Senate Transit Subdivision Chairman Scott Dibble says the proposal probably won't get a hearing in his committee. He says it pits schools against a strapped Twin Cities transit system.
