A former Republican governor has some advice for Gov. Tim Pawlenty, but the current Republican occupant of the governor's mansion probably won't like it.
Former Gov. Arne Carlson tells WCCO-AM that Pawlenty should consider tax increases to help balance the budget.
For example, he says, extending the sales tax to clothing or making a small increase in the income tax could be done with a three-year expiration date.
With the state facing a $4.6 billion deficit over the next two years, Carlson says Pawlenty and the DFL legislative leaders should consider a mix of revenue increases, spending cuts and accounting shifts.
Pawlenty has consistently opposed tax increases, including extending the sales tax to include clothing.

Carlson was a Republican governor who now considers himself an independent.
