College Students Prepare To Storm The Voting Booth
(WCCO)
Minnesota set the highest voter turnout rate in the country at the polls four years ago. Just a few weeks from another election, the Secretary of State's office says numbers have already surpassed those already set.
The state's seen 30,000 more people register to vote this time. It could end up as high as nine out of ten possible voters.
The Secretary of State's office has seen a lot more excitement on college campuses across Minnesota.
One group working at the University of Minnesota has already signed up almost 5,000 people at that school and more than 12,000 across the state.
Beyond the efforts outside, hundreds have opted to sign up inside one of the U's libraries. The school's even launched a website that answers questions about the candidates.
Ryan Kennedy is a U of M senior. He says its time the college crowd holds politicians accountable.
"We've been traditionally an underrepresented population at the polls, so it's great for us to go out and show the politicians that we really care about what they're doing," he said.
In Minnesota voters can register at the polls on election day, but those who register ahead of time won't have to wait in the registration line. The deadline to register ahead of time is Tuesday, Oct. 14.
