City, County Workers Urge Minimal Local Gov't Cuts

ST. PAUL (AP) ― Firefighters, police officers and librarians are asking state lawmakers to limit budget cuts made to local governments.

A few hundred people gathered in the cold on the steps of the state Capitol on Thursday to listen to stories told by city workers. That included one about saving a heart attack victim's life and another about helping a boy find books to get his first "A" on a school project.

Speakers at the rally, including Senate Tax Committee Chairman Tom Bakk, say state cuts to local governments will result in even higher property taxes, which they say are unfair.

Gov. Tim Pawlenty has said cities should be able to streamline services without raising taxes while still providing key services, including public safety.
