Soldier From Bovey, Minn., Died In Iraq

(AP) A soldier from Bovey, Minn., has died in Iraq, the Defense Department announced Monday night.

Army Spc. Randy W. Pickering, 31, died Sunday in Baghdad of "injuries sustained in a non-combat related incident," the department said in a news release.

Pickering was assigned to the Regimental Support Squadron, 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment, 1st Armored Division, based in Vilseck, Germany.

"The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation," the news release said.

Pickering was from Bovey, an Iron Range town about five miles northeast of Grand Rapids, or about 25 miles southwest of Hibbing.

The number of people with strong Minnesota ties who have died in connection with the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan reached 67 with his death.
