Senators: Economic Plan Must Help Rural Areas

BROOKLYN PARK, Minn. (AP) ― Minnesota's U.S. senators say any new economic stimulus plan must include help for rural America.

Sens. Norm Coleman, a Republican, and Amy Klobuchar, a Democrat, spoke Friday night at the Minnesota Farm Bureau Federation's annual conference at Brooklyn Park. Both serve on the U.S. Senate Agriculture Committee.

Coleman says rural Minnesota can help develop and produce renewable fuels and the recent drop in gas prices should not make this less of a priority.

Klobuchar says rural communities need help creating lasting jobs and modernizing roads, bridges and rail systems so they can get products to market.

She also says the new farm bill gives farmers a safety net, with permanent disaster aid and milk supports, and the task now is to keep tabs on its implementation.
