New Seat Belt Law Takes Effect This Week In Minn.

ST. PAUL (AP) ― There's added incentive to strap in before starting up a car in Minnesota beginning Tuesday.

That's when the new primary seat belt law kicks in. It will permit police officers to stop and ticket motorists simply for failing to buckle up.

Before now, law enforcement had to have another reason for pulling someone over before they could issue the seat belt ticket.

The violation for the driver and unbuckled passengers carries a $25 fine.

The Department of Public Safety plans to highlight the new law at a Capitol news conference. It was narrowly approved by the Legislature in May and signed by Gov. Tim Pawlenty.

Rep. Kim Norton, DFL-Rochester, who was chief author of the bill, said the law will save between 30 and 100 lives a year.
