DFL Reveals $1.7B Plan For School Spending

ST. PAUL (AP) ― Democrats are offering a $1.7 billion plan to spend more on classrooms and cut property taxes -- but they aren't saying how they will pay for it.

The proposal comes from a bipartisan legislative task force led by two Democrats.

They aim to focus next year's session on paying for public schools, the state's biggest single category of spending.

Their plan would cut property taxes by $600 million by having the state assume a greater share of school funding.

DFL House Speaker Margaret Anderson Kelliher says the first priority would be to re-examine current spending on public schools.

The bill will get its first hearing from House and Senate education panels on Thursday. There are also plans to hold public hearings around the state.
