Gov. Signs New Pool Safety Law

ST. PAUL (AP) ― Gov. Tim Pawlenty held a ceremonial signing Thursday for the Abigail Taylor pool safety bill.

The new law is named for the 6-year-old Edina girl who sat on a drain at a country club wading pool last June. The powerful suction pulled out part of her intestinal tract.

Abigail later underwent triple organ transplant surgery at a Nebraska hospital, and died there in March.

The Minnesota Legislature approved the bill unanimously, and Pawlenty already has signed it.

The bill requires daily physical inspections of drain covers and grates in all but residential pools.

Abigail's parents and sister attended the ceremonial signing, along with the bill's sponsors, Republican Senator Geoff Michel of Edina and DFL Representative Paul Thissen of Minneapolis.
