Reality Check: Politics And Race

(WCCO) Many people want to believe the triumphant nomination of Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama is a signal of improving race relations. But the reality is much different.

IN FACT...

In some ways, America is moving backwards. A recent CBS News Poll found black and white Americans are deeply divided over how well blacks are treated in this country.

It's TRUE.

In America , 60 percent of blacks say race relations are bad. Only 34 percent of whites believe that.

In America, 70 percent of blacks say they've been a victim of racial discrimination. Only 26 percent of whites say that.

And 80 percent of black voters view Obama favorably. About 30 percent of white voters say that.

Here's what you NEED TO KNOW.

Obama is the son of a black father from Kenya and white mother from Kansas.

His nomination is a historic step forward, but also a test of America's racial progress sharply highlights race divisions.

That's Reality Check.
