Minn. Mayors React To Pawlenty's Budget Proposal
ST. PAUL (AP) ―
Minnesota mayors say Gov. Tim Pawlenty's proposed budget would mean less service and higher property taxes.
Wadena Mayor Wayne Wolden is president of the Coalition of Greater Minnesota Cities. He says Pawlenty's proposal would mean the loss of thousands of jobs, huge property tax increases, and cuts in core services such as police and fire protection, libraries and parks, and pothole repair.
Pawlenty aims to erase half of Minnesota's projected $4.8 billion deficit by slashing state aid to cities, counties and hospitals, eliminating health care coverage for 84,000 adults and cutting most state agency budgets.
House Speaker Margaret Anderson Kelliher says the Republican governor's budget proposal "appears to be full of some gimmicks."
Republicans say they hope to see the Democrats' budget plan soon.
