New Minn. Law To Speed Searches For Missing Adults

ST. PAUL (AP) ― A new Minnesota law will require police and sheriffs to start searching right away when adults disappear under suspicious circumstances.

Gov. Tim Pawlenty signed the bill Wednesday as mourners across town prepared to remember Dan Zamlen, a University of St. Thomas freshman whose parents pushed for the legislation after his disappearance in April.

The law is named for Brandon Swanson, who disappeared a year ago in western Minnesota at age 19. He hasn't been found.

Brandon's mother, Annette Swanson, says her family never wanted to be in this situation but hopes the new law will help others.

The law does away with waiting periods when adults disappear under suspicious circumstances, or when young adults up to age 21 are reported missing under most circumstances.

Dan Zamlen disappeared April 5 after leaving a house party in the pre-dawn hours. Police recovered his body last Friday in the river near the Ford dam.
