Senator Wants Special Session For NWA Issues

ST. PAUL (AP) ― A top state senator wants Gov. Tim Pawlenty to call a special session later this year if lawmakers can do anything to blunt the impact of the Northwest-Delta merger.

Senate Finance Committee Chairman Dick Cohen said lawmakers likely won't know the results of negotiations between the state and Northwest Airlines before the Legislature's adjournment deadline of May 19, so a special session might be needed.

The St. Paul Democrat said he's concerned about the merger's fallout on Minnesota's economy.

Cohen said he's no fan of special sessions but would support a special session to "try to do what we can to limit the harm of this merger."

Commissioner Dan McElroy of the Department of Employment and Economic Development said it's too soon to know whether legislative action would be needed but he's keeping the option open.
