Minn. Lawmakers Get Down To Business Tuesday

ST. PAUL (AP) ― The dreaded job of fixing Minnesota's broken budget gets going this week.

The Minnesota Legislature convenes Tuesday for its 2009 session. The state budget is job one.

An economic forecast released last month shows they face a projected deficit of $4.8 billion for the two-year budget period. By law, lawmakers need to craft a balanced budget.

Republican Gov. Tim Pawlenty won't present his budget recommendations until later in the month.

Democrats have firm control of the House and Senate after last fall's election.

The state Constitution requires this year's session to conclude by May 18.
