Clock Ticking On Minn. Legislative Session

ST. PAUL (AP) ― Lawmakers are starting their last full week of the regular session.

Long days are expected as the clock ticks down toward the Legislature's constitutional adjournment deadline of May 18, one week from Monday.

Democrats who control the Legislature and Republican Gov. Tim Pawlenty still haven't agreed on most of the two-year state budget.

If they don't meet the deadline, a special session would be needed to finish the job.

State government is running a $4.6 billion deficit.

The session started Jan. 6 with beefed-up DFL majorities in both chambers, but still three votes short of a veto-proof majority in the House.

Around 3 a.m., before hopping in his fishing boat, Pawlenty vetoed the $1 billion package of tax increases that was passed Friday.
