Minn. Budget Deficit Could Be Over $4 Billion

ST. PAUL (AP) ― They're warning it'll be bad, but just how big Minnesota's coming budget deficit is a guessing game until Thursday.

That's when state finance officials present their economic forecast. The consensus is that it will show a deficit in the billions that lawmakers will have to correct in next year's session.

State leaders were told recently to prepare for a deficit that could top $4 billion. The figure represents the gap between revenues and spending obligations over the two-year budget period.

The forecast is one of two done each year. The other is released in late February or early March.
