Rep. Michele Bachmann has become a prominent Republican spokeswoman in recent months -- even appearing on CNN's "Larry King Live" to discuss the Democratic National Convention on Tuesday.
But her chair has stayed empty during most of two days of hearings on her party's platform.
Bachmann campaign manager Brandon Lerch says family commitments kept the first-term House member away from the hearings except for a few hours on Tuesday.
Lerch says she was in contact with platform committee members by phone.
Bachmann is a delegate to the Republican National Convention who serves on the platform committee, including a spot on a government reform subcommittee. The panel spent long days Tuesday and Wednesday hammering out the party's statement of principles.
