Former Marine To Run In Minn.'s 3rd District

ST. PAUL (AP) ― A former Marine officer who served in Baghdad is the latest candidate for Minnesota's 3rd Congressional District.

J. Ashwin Madia announced his plans to run as a Democrat on Tuesday. Madia says he wants to end the war in Iraq, balance the federal budget and tackle global warming.

The son of immigrants from India, Madia went to Osseo High School in the 3rd District and was elected student body president at the University of Minnesota. He was involved in building up the Iraqi justice system while serving in Baghdad.

The western Twin Cities suburban seat is open because Republican Rep. Jim Ramstad is retiring.

Another Democrat, state Sen. Terri Bonoff, said she plans a formal campaign announcement soon. Bonoff raised $88,500 in the first two weeks after Ramstad's unexpected decision not to run for another term.

Madia said it's his first political campaign. He plans to leave his job as an attorney with Robins, Kaplan, Miller & Ciresi in Minneapolis to campaign full-time. He will also be moving from Minneapolis to a Maple Grove address in the 3rd District on Nov. 1.
