Students Rally To Mark Iraq War's Anniversary

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) ―

More than 200 students rallied on the University of Minnesota campus Thursday to mark the five-year anniversary of the start of the Iraq war.

Police officers on bicycles and horseback arrested 16 protesters, Minneapolis Police Sgt. Jesse Garcia said.

Those arrested blocked the entrance to a National Guard recruiting office just off campus. Police did not arrest a handful of students who chained themselves to nearby Army and Navy recruiting offices, because those offices were closed and the students were not blocking the flow of traffic.

Garcia said there didn't appear to be any property damage.

The protesters briefly shut down traffic in both directions on Washington Avenue, between Oak and Ontario Streets.

Organizer Erika Zurawski with Students for a Democratic Society said she hoped the demonstration would spur some action.

"And I want students to engage themselves in being opposed to this war and really start to come out into the streets in a way that we haven't seen in recent years," she told the crowd.

About 10 Macalester College students also joined in, using bike locks to chain themselves to the door of the Army recruiting office.
