A third party that has been a big factor in statewide Minnesota elections will decide Oct. 25 whether to endorse a candidate for president.
Independence Party leaders are calling delegates together that Saturday to consider whether one of seven candidates on Minnesota's fall ballot will get its nod. Party chairman Craig Swaggert says if the party does endorse one, he expects it will be either Republican John McCain or Democrat Barack Obama.
Swaggert says he has met personally with McCain and has been asked by Obama's campaign for the party's support in what figures to be a close election.
The party has some heft. Its Senate candidate is polling near 20 percent. Under a different name, the party helped get Jesse Ventura elected governor in 1998.
