Obama Campaign Addressing Great Lakes Today

(AP) The state of the Great Lakes gets more exposure today in the presidential race.

Democratic nominee Barack Obama plans to announced his initiative to restore the lakes.

Last week, an environmental coalition called on Obama and Republican nominee John McCain to step up their support for restoration of the lakes.

Both candidates have expressed support for a $20 billion plan to address such issues as invasive species, sewage overflows, toxic pollution and loss of wildlife habitat.

But the Healing Our Waters-Great Lakes Coalition contended at its Milwaukee news conference last week that the candidates' commitments weren't strong enough to be sure they will follow through once the election is over.
