House GOP Wants More Competition In Health Care

ST. PAUL (AP) ― House Republicans want to open up Minnesota's health insurance market to outside competition.

House Minority Leader Marty Seifert and Representative Jim Abeler outlined their health care vision for 2008 at a Capitol news conference Tuesday.

Their plan would loosen regulations limiting the kind of insurance consumers can buy, opening up the state's nonprofit HMO market to more competition. The Republicans say that will drive down prices.

Democrats disagreed -- Representative Paul Thissen said there's no proof such a plan would cut costs.

And DFL Senator Linda Berglin says looser regulations would bring more fraud to the state's insurance market and could hurt the quality of health care.

Lawmakers are expected to deal with several plans for overhauling the health care system next year.
