The YouTube version of a Minnesota speech against a climate change treaty has gone viral. The conservative Minnesota Free Market Institute sponsored the event Oct. 16.
Since then, there have been more than 1.5 million page views ... and counting.
In the
YouTube video gone viral, Lord Christopher Monckton warns of a left wing conspiracy during a speech at Bethel University in St. Paul.
"They are about to impose a communist world government upon the world," declares the one-time advisor to British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. "A world government is going to be created."
The United States is trying to reach agreement with 16 nations on limiting greenhouse gas emissions that are said to cause to climate change.
Global warming skeptic Monckton warns that President Barack Obama is about to give up U.S. sovereignty by signing a climate change treaty in Copenhagen.
"In the next few weeks, unless you stop it, your president will sign your freedom, your democracy and your prosperity away forever," he said in the speech.
The conservative leaning Minnesota Free Market Institute brought Monckton to Minnesota. Its director said the former advisor to British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher is striking a chord with global warming skeptics.
"He's not tiptoeing around the issue so it's very dramatic. I guess it just hit a chord with people," said Linda Runbeck with the Minnesota Free Market Institute.
"People are up in arms," said Jeff Davis, president of the conservative group Minnesota Majority "I mean they are really upset that their government is pursuing this policy."
But for those who believe climate change is accelerating at an unprecedented pace, Monckton's YouTube popularity is unsettling.
"It's the lunatic fringe," said Michael Noble, of the group Fresh Energy.
Noble calls Monckton's YouTube performance "scary", "misleading" and "wrong" about climate change.
"It just makes me embarrassed for St. Paul and makes me embarrassed for any think tank or group that would sponsor such a silly, silly public event," said Noble.
Monckton's sponsors say the video has been linked and listed on other sites. Believers and skeptics alike appear to be driving Monckton's message.
"Perhaps, at this 11th hour," said Monckton. "At the 59th minute, the 59th second, you will rise up and you will stop your president from signing that dreadful treaty."
