The Minnesota House has unanimously passed a bill arising from the Interstate 35W bridge collapse that would standardize training requirements for people holding the title of emergency manager.
The bill would require each state agency with a key role in disaster or emergency response to have at least one person with full certification in emergency management.
The Minnesota Department of Transportation's director of emergency management and her staff lacked that professional certification at the time of the collapse.
Sonia Morphew Pitt's status became known after her whereabouts during the collapse were questioned. She was later fired amid allegations over improper travel and unauthorized expenses.
Representative Jeremy Kalin said his bill would make sure that emergency managers are adequately prepared and capable of dealing with disaster situations.
