Coleman: Economy Is In Recession

ST. PAUL (AP) ― Republican Senator Norm Coleman eliminated any doubt about his view of the U.S. economy: He says it's in recession.

The Minnesota senator said he differs from President Bush about the nation's economic struggles. Bush has avoided classifying the situation as a recession.

During an interview on CNN, Coleman said he would "be more forthright about telling the American public that we're in a recession."

Coleman says the public's anxiety over rising gas prices, food costs and health-care premiums is clear.

Coleman's appearance was a response to an earlier interview of his likely fall opponent, Al Franken. The Democratic candidate questioned Coleman's stance on economic matters.
