Coleman Files Petition Over Absentee Ballots
ST. PAUL (AP) ―
As promised, Republican Sen. Norm Coleman is asking the state Supreme Court to intervene in the recount after a ruling that let more ballots in.
Coleman filed a brief Saturday with the court, asking it to clarify how wrongly rejected absentee ballots should be sorted and counted.
On Friday, the state Canvassing Board recommended that counties sort rejected absentee ballots and count those that were erroneously set aside. It was a step suggested by Democrat Al Franken as he tries to overtake Coleman's pre-recount lead.
Upwards of 1,500 absentee ballots could have been rejected through no fault of the voter.
Coleman's petition says the advice given by the board is confusing and could lead to arbitrary handling of those ballots. It asks that all local counts be halted for now.
Franken's campaign says Coleman's petition is an attempt to stop the counting so those votes won't enter the fray.
