Candidates In Minn.'s 3rd District Focus On Energy

ST. PAUL (AP) ― Candidates running for an open congressional seat in the Minneapolis suburbs are stepping up their focus on energy issues.

Republican Erik Paulsen is calling for offshore oil drilling, new nuclear power plants and federal support for alternative energy and conservation.

Paulsen outlined his plan at a gas station in Eden Prairie on Friday.

Democrat Ashwin Madia is set to outline an environmental plan on Tuesday, after touring a bicycle parts supplier in Bloomington.

A campaign spokesman said Madia would consider offshore oil drilling and nuclear power on a case-by-case basis. Madia opposes drilling in Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

Paulsen said the debate over ANWR has become too political and he would rather focus on offshore drilling.

The Independence Party's David Dillon supports scaling back subsidies for corn-based ethanol and spending public dollars to develop power from fusion, currently still an experimental technology.
