Democratic Senate candidate Al Franken says Republican Norm Coleman will have to defend five years worth of support for President Bush and the Republican agenda in Washington.
Franken delivered a 40-minute speech to supporters at the Capitol Tuesday morning that gave strong hints of how he plans to run against Coleman, the Republican incumbent. He presented his candidacy as a vehicle for helping to set "a new direction in this country."
Franken's timing may have been an attempt to preempt Coleman, who officially kicks off his bid for a second term with a statewide tour starting Wednesday.
Franken, the former "Saturday Night Live" comedian and liberal commentator, has been shifting his focus away from the Democratic nomination fight and toward Coleman. Franken is seen as a heavy favorite to capture his party's support over peace activist Jack Nelson-Pallmeyer.
