Democrat Barack Obama's campaign is ramping up its courtship of Latino voters in Minnesota and elsewhere, hoping the low-turnout group could be the key to victory in some states.
New Mexico's Bill Richardson, the nation's only Hispanic governor, paid a visit to Minnesota on Thursday as part of a Latinos for Obama fundraising lunch. The event feeds into a $10 million effort to boost Latino turnout in the coming election.
In Minnesota, census estimates show Hispanics make up only 4 percent of the state population but their numbers are growing.
Event organizers say 22,000 voters from the ethnic group took part in the 2006 election, but that represented a 50 percent turnout of those eligible. Their goal is to increase turnout to 70 percent or more in this election.
