Legislature Passes Bill To Create MN Poet Laureate
St. Paul (AP) ―
The House has approved a bill to create a position of a Minnesota poet laureate to promote the state.
The bill now goes to the governor.
Republican Representative Barb Sykora says she hope this bill will reinvigorate people's interest in poetry.
If the bill becomes law, the Minnesota Humanities Commission would recommend to the governor someone for the job. The poet laureate would be encouraged to appear at ceremonies and celebrations and get students excited about poetry.
The poet laureate wouldn't be paid for with tax dollars.
