Ruffed Grouse Counts Up In Minnesota
ST. PAUL (AP) ―
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources says the state's ruffed grouse population is up 43 percent statewide over last year.
The numbers are up 44 percent in the northeast region -- from Lake of the Woods to Chisago County, including the entire Arrowhead region.
The DNR says ruffed grouse populations tend to rise and fall on a 10-year cycle, and this seems to be a peak. Other peaks have been marked in 1978, 1989 and 1998.
The DNR surveys the population by counting the number of male ruffed grouse heard drumming on established routes throughout the state's forest regions.
During peak years, hunters can harvest more than 1 million ruffed grouse. By comparison, in 2007, hunters killed fewer than 300,000 birds.
