A man is charged with animal cruelty after St. Paul Police said he threw a puppy into the air and dropped it, resulting in it having to be euthanized because of broken legs.
Steven Strachota, 27, has been charged with one count of felony cruelty to animals.
A witness said he saw Strachota throw the dog eight feet into the air. He saw the puppy hit the ground hard and said it was "pretty busted up."
The witness took the dog home, but didn't have the funds to help it, so he called police.
Police brought the puppy to the vet where it had to be put to sleep.
Officers arrested Strachota and he told them that he got the puppy Saturday by trading a bike for it.
He first told police that he threw the puppy about four feet in the air and tried to catch it, but missed. Then he changed his story saying that he threw the dog because, "I wanted to see if the motherf----- could fly!"
He said he was mad because he was homeless and out of work and that his thoughts were to kill the dog.
He told police he was angry and after the dog was in pain was going to stomp "that f------ dog's head in!"
Strachota also told police he received social security for being mentally disabled, and that he has mood swings and anger issues.
He will make a first appearance in Ramsey County District Court Wednesday.
