Suspected Wild Boar Was Really A Pot-Bellied Pig

DETROIT LAKES, Minn. (AP) ― State wildlife officials are now saying the European wild boar that was spotted near Detroit Lakes was actually a pot-bellied pig that likely escaped.

Department of Natural Resources wildlife manager Tom Kucera says a landowner shot the pig Tuesday morning after it had harassed her horses. Kucera says the pig weighed about 80 pounds and likely had been someone's pet.

Officials had been concerned about the possible boar sighting, because boars and feral pigs can multiply rapidly, spread diseases to wild and domestic animals. They can also be destructive to the landscape. Wisconsin, which has feral pigs, asks hunters to shoot them on sight.

Earl Johnson, a DNR wildlife manager in Detroit Lakes, says the boars also can damage habitat for deer, turkey and ruffed grouse, and will eat and destroy crops and gardens.
