Monkey Set Loose From Wis. Zoo Returns Safely

CHIPPEWA FALLS, Wis. (WCCO) ― A homeowner in Wisconsin thought she heard a squirrel on her deck earlier this month. However, she had to grab a video camera when she saw a monkey swinging in the trees.

Bubby is the name of the black capuchin monkey that was recently set free from the Irvine Park Zoo in Chippewa Falls by some vandals.

"They found the fence here was cut into -- couple big holes in the outside fence and they found all the cages open," said William Faherty.

Many of the animals got away but all were recaptured except for Bubby -- who claimed the trees, railings and roof of the rural house as her own.

Bubby "monkeyed" around the house for four days, taking fruit but not taking the bait, which was a banana left inside a trap.

The homeowner said they bonded with Bubby and that the monkey looked through their house's windows at them just as much as they looked out to watch her.

Eventually, the need for a banana led to the monkey's rescue from the woods.

Zoo officials are now deciding on how to make sure this doesn't happen again.

"We've been looking at security cameras for a couple of years now and I think this will be the push to really look at that, "said Faherty.

Chippewa Falls police said three teenagers confessed to using a bolt cutter to free the animals from the zoo. They now face misdemeanor charges of criminal damage to property and unauthorized release of animals.

The homeowners who helped get Bubby back to the Irvine Park Zoo now want to help raise money to improve the space where she and the other animals live. It is their hope this facility will one day allow the monkey to climb and jump freely -- like she did for four days in the trees around their home.

If you'd like to help protect the zoo from vandals, consider contributing to this fund to beef up security and improve the animals' homes.
