The Minnesota Zoo set a new 1-year attendance record with more than 1.3 million visitors.
Zoo attendance increased 16 percent in the fiscal year that ended Tuesday and memberships increased by 21 percent.
Zoo officials credit some of the increase to the opening of the Russia's Grizzly Coast in 2008.
They said that exhibit brought in many new visitors.
They admit that the economy is also at play and that zoos across the country are reporting attendance increases, although few have grown as much as the Minnesota Zoo.
The zoo said that people are choosing lower-cost, closer-to-home attractions, like zoos, in order to save money.
