Happy The Hippo Arrives At Milwaukee County Zoo

MILWAUKEE (AP) ― A popular hippo from a Washington D.C. zoo has found a new home at the Milwaukee County Zoo.

The public first got to see Happy Tuesday, but he arrived at the zoo Sept. 29.

The 28-year-old male Nile hippopotamus, weighing 5,500 pounds, was born at the Smithsonian National Zoological Park but had to be relocated because the zoo was expanding its elephant facilities to take over Happy's area.

Happy will eventually be introduced to female hippos, Patti and Puddles, in hopes they will mate. They can see each other now through metal bars.

Zoo spokeswoman Jennifer Diliberti says they are thrilled with how well he's settling into his first new zoo ever.
