Donations Keep Pet Shelters Running
by Mary Tan
(WCCO)
At the Minnesota Valley Humane Society, food comes from the kind hearted.
Kris McDowell, of the Minnesota Valley Humane Society says, "We receive no state or local funding, so donations are what we rely on."
Last year the Burnsville Humane Society placed more than 3,000 pets in loving homes.
The two owners of Festival Foods Stores heard about it and decided yesterday they need to help those who can't speak for themselves. The grocery chain is launching its first pet food-food shelf in their Bloomington, Minn. store.
Tom Clasen, director of operations for Festival Foods says, "We hope to roll this program out to all of our stores. We are currently working with each of the local pet shelters in our store areas to see if they'll cooperate with this."
Yesterday's charitable conception is now reality. Everyone at the humane society --two-legged, four-legged, furry and not furry -- hope people from the Twin Cities will spend just a little more at the grocery store.
"We have to do the best that we can for them," said McDowell. "If we don't have to put as much money into the food for them, we can put that into other areas to help them out."
The food shelf will be a six-week pilot program that will only be held at the Bloomington Festival Foods Store. Each bag of pet food will cost five dollars.
