Determined Trucker Reunited With Lost Dog

Florence, Ala. (AP) ― A Minnesota trucker has been reunited with his dog Checkers, a Brittany Spaniel who jumped from his cab and disappeared into the woods near an industrial park last Friday.

Tom Nelson was reunited with Checkers this week, after she was found behind the Essex Wire plant in Florence. Checkers had been given food and water but would not go with people.

He said she had been abused by a previous owner and was leery of strangers. "She came to me," Nelson told the TimesDaily in a story Wednesday.

"I knew it was her from 300 feet away," he said. "That orange color she has is predominant."

Nelson had adopted Checkers only six weeks before she jumped from his cab during a delivery in Florence Lauderdale Industrial Park. Unable to find her, Nelson had to leave the park and complete his route.

But the resident of Albert Lea, Minn., drove about 900 miles back to Florence in his personal vehicle Monday.

Nelson took Checkers to a veterinarian Tuesday for treatment of what appeared to be a broken foot that she suffered during her ordeal.

"I was tickled to death he got her back," said animal control officer Kenny Price, who joined Nelson in the search. "It made my day."
