Morton Horseman In Mustang Makeover

MORTON, Minn. (AP) ― The "extreme makeover" concept has come to horses.

A Minnesota man is competing in what's called Midwest Extreme Mustang Makeover, a competition in which trainers get 90 days to gentle a wild horse. Dennis Auslam of Morton, who owns Redwood Stables, picked up his horse last month.

Judging happens at the Midwest Horse Fair in Madison, Wis., April 17-19.

The competition offers $11,000 in prize money, but the real goal is to increase adoptions of the mustangs.

The three- and four-year-old mustangs are rounded up in Nevada as part of a federal program that periodically removes extra animals from the range. The idea is to ensure herd health and protect rangeland resources.
