Wis. Man To Serve 1 Year For Hanging Dog

WAUSAU, Wis. (AP) ― A state appeals court says a one-year jail sentence is fair for an Outagamie County man who hung his dog from a garage rafter with its choke chain.

Eric Shattuck of Appleton was convicted of felony mistreatment of an animal in 2008 in a plea agreement that called for prosecutors to recommend six months in jail.

The 3rd District Court of Appeals ruled Tuesday that Circuit Judge Mitchell Metropulos' decision to hand down a one-year sentence properly took into account the seriousness of the crime and the punishment was not shockingly excessive.

Court records say the 36-year-old Shattuck attempted to kill his dog Swiper in September 2007 by feeding it antifreeze but the dog refused to drink it. The records say that after the dog attempted to bite him, Shattuck got angry, took it to the garage and hung it.
