Pet Shelter Takes In Dogs From Other Rescue Places

(WCCO) Animal rescue workers are seeing a heartbreaking trend nationwide. The recent economic downturn has forced some people who are financially-strapped to give away their pets.

A Twin Cities animal shelter has found a way to help deal with the problem in Minnesota and so far they've rescued a record number of dogs.

At the Animal Humane Society of Golden Valley, a litter of labs in a large container is wheeled into the adoption floor. They are the victims of tough economic times, likely given away because their owners couldn't afford them.

"Pets are discretionary -- luxury items for folks," said Kathy Johnson, Director of Animal Services. "Unfortunately, paying for the pet, paying for vet care is one of the first things that people cut back on."

However, it's not a trend in the Twin Cities. Golden Valley has empty cages and they're asking rural shelters, filled to capacity to send their extra dogs to their location for adoption.

So far in 2008, 1000 dogs have arrived from shelters in greater Minnesota.

The shelter won't tell potential pet owners the dog's history or what county they came from. All they'll say is that the dog was a transfer and couldn't find a home in the country.

"This is a very common scenario. Where these puppies, the majority of them will be gone by tomorrow," said Johnson.

The shelter in Golden Valley is accepting dogs from shelters in Wisconsin and Iowa as well.

However, it has an overpopulation of cats and is not taking cats from other locations.
