Cows Invited To Sup In Minn. Wildlife Areas

SEDAN, Minn. (AP) ― Drivers in western Minnesota may be surprised to soon see cattle grazing on several state and federal wildlife management areas.

It's part of a state and federal project to test the potential benefits of managed grazing for grassland habitats.

Department of Natural Resources wildlife manager Richard Olsen says the idea is to mimic the ancient cycle of fire, intensive grazing and rest.

In modern times, that means prescribed burns, hay or biomass harvesting, livestock grazing, and idling the land.

The project starts this month in Pope and Stevens counties at the Sedan Wildlife Management Area, the Edwards Waterfowl Production Area and other public lands in the area.

The state DNR, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Nature Conservancy, local governments and several local livestock operators are participating.
